The beach: Icxel

Today we went to the beach. It was really fun and i had a really good time! The water was really cold, but i got in anyway! It looked like evryone had a really good time. We tried to make a human pyramid, but it did not come out as we thought it would. We were really close to accomplish it though. It was worth the try!

5th day:Gio

The 5th day we did many experiments. My favorite one was when we froze cheetos and ate them, it seemed as if we were smoking because smoke would come out of our mouths. We also did another lab where we looked for item that soaked up oil in water.

That same day we went to a tsunami assumulation building. they showed us the things that happen when they happen and also the things we can do to try to get away safely.

The same day many colleges and universities visited and explained what they have to offer. A guy named Jesus(chuy) went and told us his story as he grew up. His story was very interesting and touching because I have been through many of the same things he has been through. All the other mentors were really interesting and what they had to offer really helped me out.

Talent Show Coming Up!! Eddaliz

Today's News...
By, Eddaliz
Today was sunny with cool breezes and the sky looked quite promising. We had to wake up earlier than the sun and I still feel quite tired as I write this report. Despite my exhaustion, today is the day. Today is the talent show. I feel exited and unsure if our skit will be satisfying to the audience.
On the other hand, I think that our group's plot is hilarious and will make every one laugh their heads off all the way to their daily blogging. Besides, even if we make mistakes we'll still learn from them and have fun.
A short report on yesterday's trip. It was fun and exhilarating. My favorite part was when we touched the sea animals and when we went to the gift shop. I bought my family a souvenir and took tons of pictures. Afterwards, we went to the beach and played volley ball. Therefore, did I mention we had fun?

Fish and Squid

On Wednesday we went to the aquarium!,how cool is that.We got up as usual at 5:30,ran and came back and got ready to go.The ride over there was pretty boring.Too many trees. When we got to the aquarium there was a big line but thanks to the staff we didn't have to wait.My group first went to see the sea Otters. It's funny how they lay on their backs when they eat.Otters are very smart, specially when they followed what their instructors were commanding them to do.After that we went to see the octopus.Did you know that an octopus can squeeze in very small cracks, and that they can lift about one pound in each tentacle!,and we saw sharks too!
What i really enjoyed was going to the research center. We saw different types of aquatic animals and we dissected a squid!
I really enjoyed being in the aquarium i learned a lot.

Wednesday and Thursday, Noemi

Hello again! I didn't get a chance to write on wednesday so I have to share what happened yesterday and today. Yesterday was a very fun day we went to the aquarium and the beach! But before we left we quickly went to the football stadium. I'm going to be honest I know some of you are fans but I'm just saying... I'm not a beaver fan but i liked the stadium it was pretty big.

When we got the the aquarim I was kind of expecting to see a whale but I didn't oh well but I did see a shark, many of them it was kind of scary but awesome. While we were walking around there was this thing that you could touch these weird feeling water creatures it was tight! Then we after that we went to eat some McDonald's mmm... healthy!

Oh sorry did I mentioned that we went to this place that we were observing sea animals? Well yea we did it was really fun because I got to touch alot of cool animals, poor I bet they thought I was going to torture them!

Then we finally get to the beach man was it nice, some of the staff said that it was the first time that it's nice and not cloudy so elizabeth (sorry lizz I'm calling you out) says that it's because we are special so Romeo (one of the staff) told us to say it like we ment it and we got everyone to yell out "WE ARE SPECIAL!" that was fun. We also did the pyramid and I said that it was a true challenge because we got everyone to climb on!

Now... Let's talk about today! We had a long day because we were walking all day. First we went to go do some science experiment thatinvolved mixing things. Then we went to mess around with dry ice and cheetos it was so cool becuase the teacher I don't know how she did but I think she put the cheetos in a container with dry ice and when ever I would eat the cheetos it looked like smoke comming out but it was just vapor. Dang I put two in my mouth and I made the vapor come out of my nose! It was funny because my friend Patty was laughing the whole time! Then we went to go see some visitors that came to talk about how they succeded in going to collage and different type of careers, I think my favorite person to talk to was Jesus... sorry I forgot what his last name was. He was pretty chill because he talked to us like if he was our age and he talked a little about his life, he lived a pretty ghetto life and I was so impressed how he succeded after dropping out of high school I learned alot today.

Well now to wrap things up, this is my last day blogging and I really enjoyed this because it was like a journal or "diary" I enjoyed this field trip and I hope to come back soon!

Day 5: Icxel

Today was really awsome! We ment othere adults from diffrent colleges that gave us really good information. We met a couple of community leaders that talked with us to. They were really interesting people to talk to. A guy that i met today has been through so many things, he dropedout of high school; he lost his little brother; was involved in gang violence. He mananged to get his G.E.D. and go to a community college. With a little that he told us, I learned a lot. He said that it didnt matter were you came from, as long as you know were you are going.

4th day:Gio

On the 4th day we went to the Newport Aquarium. We looked around and had lots of fun. I saw many animals and learned new things about them. It was really cold but I still had fun.

That same day we went to dissect a squid. My partner was Gustavo(left). Before I didn't know who he was and know I do and I think he's a really fun guy. When we finished dissecting the squid we decided to make a face with the tentacles and ink, it was really fun.

That same day we went to The Devil's Punchbowl. It was really fun but also really cold. Only a couple people got in the water but it was fun. We decided to make a pyramid with most of the students and staff members. We ended getting one good picture before the pyramid collapsed. After the beach we went home and played a couple of games until it was time to go to bed.

Introduction, Noemi

To start with my name is Noemi and I would like to introduce my self to all my audiences, I am a proud Latina that is enrolled in the Oregon Migrant Leadership Institute. I am not much of a talker when I'm around people I don't know very well but eventually I start making simple conversation with them, and sooner or later I am making a new friend. I love making people laugh even though I sometimes try not to but I guess its just me, I like to say funny things about objects that surround me or just plainly being silly. I am a friendly person, very easy to talk to plus I like meeting new people so hey you already know my name what's yours!
Being honest here im not quite expirienced yet because it's my first day but I will be fully in by the end of this week I can asure you that. In the mean time I can tell you about what I experienced today, yea I think that sounds good. Today as I said is my first day here in campus and to tell you the truth i'm tired, I think i'm the only one out of my friends here that woke up at 5:30 am. It's kind of funny because I thought that we were leavining from home base at 7:2o am so I woke up earlier than usual to get ready and when I get there, say at 7:15 I see that no one is there so I started to panick thinking that the bus had already left but then people started getting there. Now after 3 hours of having numb legs for sitting down we get to campus.

Monday, Noemi

Today was a better day than yesterday, even though im not very used to waking up at 5:30 am to go run a mile! I didn't mind it though that actually helped me wake up. Later after breakfast the staff announces that we are going to go to the challenge courses I was exited because before coming someone had told me that there were going to be these high poles that we were going to climb, even though I might be a little scared of heights I like risking chances. The one I would say that was more challenging was the one that there were these stairs looking ones I don't know what it's called but at least I know which one it is; I had to climb it with partner because it was a mission impossible to go by your self. To say which one was my favorite it would be the multi vine because the wire that I was suppose to cross on was really thin and I was trying my best not to start laughing because I know I would of fallen... that would of been funny if I did.

Later after eating lunch we went bowling I don't really know how to play, well it is my first time playing so yea. I liked it though because some of my friends were not that good either so I wasn't alone. I had fun today and I look forward for a great week!!

wednesday, Alejandra

Dodgeball: Icxel

Today was just awsome! I had such a good time. At first I really didn't want to play. Then I saw that it wasnt as bad, so I just stept out of my confert zone and played. It looked like everyone was haveing a good time. I was thinking to myself if everyone is haveing a good time, then why shouldnt I? After words it was really hot! So we were just resting for a while and got a drink of water.

2nd day:Gio

The second day we were there I had to do "The Chicken Dance" because I had forgotten my name tag in the lobby the day before. I was really embarrassed because I had to do it in front of a lot of people. Many people were laughing and I thought it was at me, but it wasn't, they were laughing with me. That day during that dance I learned that many of the times that I do something and people laugh it isn't because they are laughing at me it's that they are enjoying the moment and laughing with me. That was one of my main goals to achieve as the week went on. If I achieved something that big the second day I can't wait to see what I achieve next.

After breakfast we went to a challenge course. When we got there I was really excited but also nervous because I had never done any of the challenges. We did a lot of small challenges that tought me how to learn how to trust. In my case I had to trusr my friend David (on the left) to catch me as I fell back. I was really nervous for the challenge but I was up for it. When I did I liked it and did two more times.

Later that day the challenges got harder because they were up in the air. I was the first to step up to the jumping challenge and was really nervous and anxious. When I was about to climb the pole one of the helpers there gave me advice to jump, his advice was picture a goal or dream that I reallyt wanted.

Tuesday, Noemi

Hey again! Today I did not feel like waking up oh man I went to sleep nearly at 1 in the morning because it was uncomfortably hot. I still managed myself to get up, Today was pretty hot too I would guess about 90 to 95 degrees? I love the weather though.. Well let's not get all carried away shall we? I would say that I had a long day because we stayed most of the day in our groups in one classrooms. But today the activity i enjoyed most was the knot game because we could only use ONE hand and the other behind your back, on my luck we used our left hands, yea I'm a lefty and I like it. At first we were discussing how were we going to untie the knots but then we realized that it was just a pattern one had to go through a loop first
, then the next, and then the next... I had fun right there.

Later one of my group staff says that we are going to go to the next classroom because we are going to build a bridge of knowledge, and the "egg drop" at that moment I ask myself What is that? But as we went into the class and they gave us material for the bridge I said oh okay now I get what we are doing, we had to build a bridge out of straws marshmallows and toothpicks. At first my group didn't know how to to come up with an idea but after one of my partners ate several marshmallows she got an idea. Then we did the egg drop, that I would honestly say was a bit more challenging because we had to figure out how to keep the egg safe when falling from a 3 story window with some of he material that we were given. I would love to say that my group's work was a success but... Nope it wasn't the egg broke but it was fun watching the others egg fall and break.

After dinner, we went to go play dodge ball; I like that game but the thing is that I am not much of a thrower I'm more of a catcher but not a perfect one. I like being out in the game but my head problem I don't know, I hope not but I think I have migraines so I can get light headed really easy so it's hard for me to keep up in sports. After that it's just me here blogging about what I enjoyed today.

Active Activities and a Short Briefing, Eddaliz

Activities and Game Briefings

By, Eddaliz

In this highly important briefing, I am going to to tell you my most fun and top ranking activities that I participated in since I got to OSU. Before I tell you about that, I must say that in quite a short time, I was surprised that I had a lot of fun and learned a lot of things I wasn't aware of before.

My main favorite activity is pole climbing with a side dish of dodge ball and blogging for dessert. First, I'll tell you why I like pole climbing; it's fun. Never in my life have I ever dreamed of climbing up a tall pole. This activity took away the doubt that I had of myself. I doubted myself and always thought that I feared heights.

Well, that aside, my second most favorite activity is dodge ball. When I played dodge ball here, I didn't hesitate much to throw the ball at someone, or feel intimidated by the other players. I let myself have fun and enjoy the game as much as I could. I've loved dodge ball since I was small, and was always completely submerged in the game. Alas, my childish joy was cut short when I kept on getting hit in my face. But, you know what they say. "If you fall down, get back up."

Something that completely surprised me was, I liked to blog. When I was first introduced to blogging, I didn't feel at all interested; for a short time. Later on, I learned that blogging is kind of like an E-mail. Only, it was similarly like a way to express yourself to others. Blogging is something that I picture myself doing after I go back home to enjoy my ramaining days of freedom.

In conclusion to this briefing, written by Me, Myself, and I. My stay at OSU has changed me in several ways. One, for example, I learned that even though the chicken dance is popular I decided to make volitions (choices) carefully and with confidence. I hope that I get accepted at OSU when I'm older and achieve my passion to become a veterinarian.

Challenge Course: Brenda

Challange day for me was really fun and exciting.I felt so scared but at the same time i wanted to try it. When we got there and i saw the humoungous i coudn't wait to get on, but before I could do that we played some games which enjoyed very much. The game that we are playing in the picture abouve consists of everyone touching eachothers feet without letting go and getting accross some cones. In the begging everyone was doin their own thing and well it didn't really work out.So we worked together as a team and came up with an idea that one person would go at a time. That helped alot and one at a time everyone got to the other side and faster.

After the fun games it was time to get the harnests on.Those might be the hardest things to put on,you had to twist the belt, fasten the belt, put it through here, put it through there, circle it around you,Wow! were they confusing and specially uncofterble!,it took us forever to put on. After all that we got to the fun part,

Climbing the Poles!

I felt so scared to climb up there, they were like 40 feet tall!

We all took turns going up and down the poles. It was hard at first but after you got used to the whole thing, it got easier. I first went on one that we had to do it with a partner and help eachother. At firts Nelly and me didn't know what to do.We jumped,we held on,we squermed but we could not get on.The guys that were there to help us gave Nelly and me some tips and told us to work together. That helped alot.At the end we didn't complete it all, although it wasn't hard my partner couldn't go on,but i was very happy and proud of both of us for atleast giving it a try. This day was Amazing!

Challange course: Icxel

Today was really fun ( Im the one with my hands in my pockets!). We went to the challange courses today. The obsticles looked really scary. I am super duper afraid of hights. They looked really hard to accomplish I had to step out of my confert zone a little and try. When I was climbing the pole to do the cat walk, I was really scared. I was backing down, but everyone was saying "you can do it!". I got courage and kept on going. I finally got to the top and felt really accomplished when I was comeing down.

Totally awesome challenge!! Eddaliz

Dear Blog,

Today was totally awesome! Everything was awesome. Except the mile that we had to run in the morning, and the increased dance recruitment. I guess we can't have enough of the chicken dance.

Besides that, everything was 100% awesome. For our schedule today, a challenge was plotted. Before going there I was so curious and wanted to know what it was. When we got there, I was nervous and excited when I saw the tall ginormous poles. I was impatient and wanted to start climbing right away. Well, after a few games, that from 1 to 10 I gave a 7, the time came to put on the climbing harness.

From all the complicated things that I learned in life, I'd put, putting on a harness in my top 10 most complicated things. It took at least 30 minutes according to my not so precise intelligence. (The result of not bringing my watch with me.)

When I was climbing the pole I didn't feel in the least scared. However, when I got to the top and saw tiny toy people it just took the breath out of me. Despite my unexpected surprise I managed to complete the whole switching and leaning back to get lowered down. The whole thing was just awesome! I hope tomorrow will be more exciting. I wonder how it will be? The thing that I'm absolutely sure of, is that I got more popular and was offered the honor to dance the chicken dance. It's not that bad at all. Really; everyone should try it before departing. P.S I'm the one in the pink.

First day: Gio

Hello my name is Giovanni. I was given the opportunity to come and meet new people and to learn leadership skills. I am here because someone saw the things that I am capable of doing and recomended me to attend OMLI. I decided to come so I could go through a new experience. I'm a very shy person and that is one of my main goals to conquer on this trip.

The first day we arrived I was nervous for what was to come. I noticed that there were a couple of people that I had already known and others that I had seen around school so I was more relaxed. Right from the start things started getting fun. I was getting along with the staff and other students very well.

We played many games the first day, it was a day were people could start to get used to the daily things. Most people were showing leadership but I was really shy to speak. When Miguel and (two of the mentors for my group) told us to not be scared and come out of our comfort zone and step up I tried my best and started to talk little by little. Eventually that day I was talking more and I even lead a game I knew.

Intro:Brenda

Hello my name is Brenda (I'm the one in boots)I got the opportunity to come here because someone saw that i had some leadership skills and potential. I hope to learn and understand the everyday life of a collage student, and the skills you need to be successful.I hope OMLI helps me in the future to be able to get into collage. This institution has helped a lot of students get scholarships which is a big help since it's really expensive and a lot of them don't have the money to pay for it.My dream is to become a Marine Biologist.I've always been interested in marine animals, finding new ways to help them. I'm really looking foward for everything we're ganna do in the time i'm here.

First Day!: Icxel

Hello my name is Icxel (The one on the right who is looking up) , and I haved lived in Oregon all my life. Im the third oldest from four. I have two brothers and one sister. Both of my brothers have graduated from high school. I got the opportunity to come here because someone saw that I had leadership skills in me and believed in me. Today was our first day. I thought it was going to be boring at first, but once you start getting involved and start talking to people it's actually pretty fun! You get to meet new people, and have a conversation with them. Its a place were you can be yourself, and just have fun. The people here are really nice and they give really good advice.

Toro Toro: Eddaliz

My name is Eddaliz and I had a lot of fun today. I met new students and made a few friends. A motto that reflects who I am is "What goes around comes around." If you're nice and polite to people they will be nice to you too. In the first picture we are playing Toro Toro, I'm the one with the pink shirt. On the second picture I'm the one with the watch. We were playing games and talking about leadership. One good thing that happened today was that I realized that this camp might not be so bad, a bad thing that happened today was that tomorow early in the morning I have to do the dreaded chicken dance. On the other hand, it might not be so bad because I'm not doing it alone.
